Mommy Stories: There Will Come A Time
By: Monique Staples
As a parent you never want to see your child get hurt. You do everything in your power to protect them. You baby proof everything. You watch them like a hawk. You quickly grab things out of their grasps that they shouldn’t have.
Then in a flash when you least expect it they try to get their bunny out of their crib and go flying into a rocking chair, giving themselves a bruise that lasts for a week and makes you feel so guilty every time you look at them.
It’s true what they say - your child is a piece of your heart that walks around the world. And that their pain becomes your pain.
I’ll never forget what one of the nurses who taught us our parenting class said to us: "Try to take in the times when they cry because of something you can fix because there will come a time when they come home hurt by someone else and there will be nothing you can do to take that pain completely away".
So for now, I’m thankful I can kiss the scraped knees and bumped heads, I’m grateful I can get snacks, change dirty bums, and offer extra cuddles. I’m grateful that I can protect him 99.9% of the time from getting hurt or sad. But I know one day I’ll have to let this piece of my heart venture out into the chaos! And I’ll just have to do my best to have some snacks and hugs waiting for him when the going gets rough.
Parenting is a rollercoaster of emotions but I’m so happy to be here for the ride! 🎢
