Mommy Stories: The Hard Truths of Parenthood
By Monique Staples
I think many of us sugar-coat our family life to try not to scare those around us who have yet to venture into the world of parenthood. However, the best advice I had heading into his were those who spoke truth to me. Those who told me that breastfeeding is hard, you will be exhausted, but it will all get easier with time as everyone adjusts (you, your partner and your baby). There are many hard truths wrapped within the miracle of having a child: you won’t always feel excited and happy, there are days you’ll daydream about the times you could walk out the door with just your wallet and keys, eating three meals a day will have to become a conscious priority or you will pass right over them, you won’t always know what to do to calm your child, the lies and feelings of inadequacy you used to feel will only multiply if left unaddressed, mom guilt is a very strong and very real feeling, maintaining intimacy and being able to have a conversation with your partner will also become a checklist item in your day. And yet somehow, it will be the best thing you’ve ever experienced and ever done.
Throughout all the trials of parenthood, you find strength and you find inspiration. Like taking your baby for a car ride to calm them down or trying vacuum sounds on the TV. You will grow more in the first few weeks of their lifetime then you have every grown your whole life. You will learn the gift of sacrifice and dedication. It will empower you and show you that you are capable of prevailing through hard times. This knowledge of personal strength (if validated and acknowledged) can help you achieve any goal you set your mind to.
Having Hayden proved to me that I am capable of great things. I am capable of taking giant leaps in life and landing on my feet. I am capable of rising above fear and moving forward. I am wildly capable. And so are you. Or so will you be.
Don’t fear the unknown, face the truth head on and move forward with the belief that you will grow through this experience.
